Oppenheimer moview review

Love and regret lie at the heart of Christopher Nolan’s movies no matter how complex and demanding they seem in structure and storytelling. True to his style in spirit but deviating from the usual in execution and content, the acclaimed director creates a moving masterpiece on human disillusionment. How a man’s biggest discovery and bravery marked his biggest doom. Oppenheimer may have been a genius, but he wasn’t acquainted with the ways of the world. He spoke his mind, trusted everyone, and paid a price for it.

Talky and dense, the film unravels like a psychological horror-investigative-courtroom thriller even as it recreates known historical events. IMAX cameras go dangerously close to the actors exposing every pore, every unsaid emotion, and every falling tear perfectly. Sound and silence especially in that chilling detonation scene, play an unsettling game of hide and seek. Ludwig Göransson’s music lends the film its unnerving ticking time bomb effect. Nolan keeps amplifying your anxiety, holding you emotionally captive with no interest to slow down whatsoever. You find yourself being moved to tears as he finally releases his flawed lead character from the prison of his own guilt.

The 3-hour long film is based on Pulitzer Prize-winning biography called ‘American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer’. It meticulously follows the celebrated and controversial physicist's life story in a nonlinear fashion. The narrative shuttles between past and present while addressing the key events leading up to the nuclear test and its repercussions. These involve the American Jew’s equation with self, fellow scientists including Albert Einstein, political activism leaning left, implications on him being a Russian spy and revocation of his security clearance in an unfair government hearing.

A man who took great pride in his discoveries could never look at it in the eye. The atomic bomb though only forms a section of the film, it largely studies the mindset of its creator. Oppenheimer’s ambition and relentless love for physics swamp him with a sense of impending doom and moral scruples. Nolan cleverly pits Oppenheimer’s heart against his mind and the disconnect between the two at the centre of his film.

If you happen to be a World War II geek, you will get the Germany-USA-Japan-Russia arms race and socio-political situation better.

One man’s desire to combat fascism and save lives resulted in the destruction of human lives and no one could have played it better than Cillian Murphy. His soul-piercing blue eyes convey agony and quiet anger remarkably. Robert Downey Jr and Emily Blunt are excellent. Matt Damon, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh are well cast in extended cameos.

Oppenheimer leaves you in tatters as it is a gripping piece on a man consumed by guilt and inner turmoil. “A man who became death, the destroyer of worlds.” You won't forget this film for a long time.

A family's getaway to a luxurious rental home takes an ominous turn when a cyberattack knocks out their devices, and two strangers appear at their door.

Leave of world Movie Review

Story: Amanda Sanford’s (Julia Roberts) surprise staycation with her family turns into a mysterious nightmare after two strangers land up at their door and a cyber attack leads to strange occurrences around them.

Review: When the Sanfords leave for a quick getaway to a nearby town, little do they know that their lives are going to change forever. It all starts when the Sanfords - a regular American family of four, going through the usual pulls and pressures of life, decide to go on a weekend break for some much needed peace and quiet.

Amanda finds a steal deal online for a palatial villa on the outskirts of a neighbouring town. They set off on a long drive to their rented home, planning to relax, rejuvenate and reconnect with each other. But soon, mysterious and unexplained things start happening around them. First, a cargo ship docks onto the shores of a public beach where the Sanfords are soaking in some sun. This is followed by more weird stuff like a blackout and a strange father-daughter duo landing up at the villa where the Sanfords are staying, claiming it to be their own. As they reluctantly let them stay back for the night, it's the beginning of a much bigger and deeply sinister nightmare that seems to be a result of a massive cyber attack.

Director and co-writer Sam Esmail feeds on our curiosity right from the beginning until the end, slowly revealing the weird occurrences, one strange incident at a time. But at 2 hours and 21 minutes, Esmail takes too long to give us the answers and stretches the unexplained chaos for a very long time. And to top it all, he doesn't do it any faster. The slow pace of the screenplay is a real buzzkill and robs this thriller of the thrill that was expected out of it.

Julia Roberts, an actress par excellence has done roles that are far deeper and better defined than this. So, to play a paranoid mother groping in the dark for answers about what's happening around her and to her family, comes effortlessly to her. She does a fine job, but frankly there isn't much for her to perform here except that one monologue on mass illusion. She is so believable and right when she says, "We use paper straws and order the free range chicken, but deep down we know we are not fooling anyone."

Ethan Hawke and the rest of the cast perform well too, but their characters are written as a bunch of cliches. Like Archie Sandford (Charlie Evans), has to be a horny young boy just because he is a teenager and will lech after any girl he sees, thanks to his raging hormones. His younger sister Farrah Mackenzie, who plays the Friends-obsessed Rose is endearing. GH Scott (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha'la) are the scary black family, who intrude on a privileged white family’s staycation.

For a thriller, Leave The World Behind has sporadic action, which is far too less to make it an edge-of-the-seat-entertainer that it could have been. It presents a grim and apocalyptic scenario that’s absolutely possible in the world we live in. But all in all, this is an oft-repeated world-is-coming-to-an-end plot that goes around many circles and gets lost in the loop of confusion, leaving you with more questions than answers in the end.

 Spaceman Movie Review

When was the last time you looked at the exquisite list of synonyms for the word “baffled”? They may be among the best in the English language: puzzled, nonplused, discombobulated, flummoxed, stumped, fogged, wildered, buffaloed. They’re delicious, delightful, full of consonants, evocative of a very particular feeling: you’re presented with something that seems as though it should be clear, but you can’t make it make sense.

The occasion for my bout of word nerdery is the Adam Sandler movie “Spaceman,” and for that I thank the film. It is not a particularly confusing movie on its own, in part because we’ve seen its likes before: a spaceman, alone in the inky blackness, goes a little nuts, and also gains clarity on his life back on earth. What’s flummoxing about “Spaceman” isn’t what it is, but why it is.

Some bad movies were never going to be good (“Argylle”). Other bad movies never even tried (“Madame Web”). But “Spaceman” is that exquisite rare third thing — an awful movie, a very bad movie indeed, whose lousiness was almost certainly not apparent while it was in production.
Every sign points toward, if not a masterpiece, at least a pretty interesting genre experiment. The film has Sandler, whose acting chops are often underrated, in a dramatic role as the titular spaceman, whose name is Jakub. It has the great Carey Mulligan, who is currently up for a best actress Oscar, playing his estranged, pregnant wife Lenka. It is scored by the ubiquitous Max Richter. Its director, Johan Renck, also directed the outstanding mini-series “Chernobyl,”
among the best television made in the past decade. And though it’s the screenwriter Colby Day’s first major feature, it’s based on Jaroslav Kalfar’s novel “Spaceman of Bohemia,” which won praise from science fiction critics.

When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age.

Review: The Ghostbusters franchise is as representative of American pop culture in the 1980s as it gets. However, subsequent sequels have struggled to rekindle the original's magic, and ‘Frozen Empire’ is no different. Set against the backdrop of New York City—a return to the franchise's origins—the film follows the Spengler family's battle against an ancient spirit with ambitions to shackle the city in ice. The narrative's shift back to the bustling streets of New York and the reanimation of the Ghostbusters' firehouse aims to recapture the original's charm. Instead, it underlines the film's inability to establish its own identity. Despite the allure of iconic moments and the return of beloved characters, ‘Frozen Empire’ stumbles, unable to balance its vast ensemble and myriad of subplots.

While it revels in nostalgia, bringing back franchise fan favourites, the film's reliance on these elements feels like a crutch rather than celebrating its heritage. At the heart of the movie’s issues is its script, penned by director Gil Kenan and screenwriter Jason Reitman. The dialogue often falls flat, and the comedic timing, a hallmark of the franchise, is noticeably absent. Not even the usually reliable Paul Rudd can salvage the film's attempts at humour. Meanwhile, fan favourite Bill Murray emerges and exits from scenes without much reason. The movie's sprawling cast, each vying for screen time, results in a disjointed narrative, leaving many character arcs feeling rushed or entirely redundant. However, McKenna Grace's portrayal of Phoebe offers a glimmer of hope. Her subplot, involving an unlikely friendship, introduces themes of identity and self-discovery that resonate amidst the chaos. This relationship, though underexplored, hints at the depth and creativity that could have been had the film focused more on character development and less on spectacle.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ is a missed opportunity to reanimate a beloved franchise. While it may momentarily thaw the hearts of die-hard fans with callbacks and cameos, it ultimately leaves audiences yearning for the feel-good factor and wit of the original. Although rich with potential, the film is a mishmash of fan service, underdeveloped characters, and underwhelming humour.

Deadpool & Wolverine Review

Story: Deadpool, aka Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), pulls Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back from the dead to save his own world from a powerful and diabolical enemy. But before they can save the world, will they end up killing each other?

Review: Deadpool has always been known for his wisecracks and witty comebacks, but this time, Ryan Reynolds (also a co-writer) takes it up several notches, making this Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) tentpole a riotous affair. His comedic punches are even more impactful than the physical ones, both of which land with an impact.

wn Levy, hailed by many as the saviour of the MCU's troubled fortunes, delivers a self-aware, self-deprecating gag fest from the very first scene. This franchise outing spares no one, poking fun at everything – from Disney's takeover of Fox to Hugh Jackman's seemingly eternal association with the franchise as Wolverine. Even Captain America and Mad Max aren't safe from Deadpool’s relentless jabs. It's a no-holds-barred chaotic comedy that pulls out all the stops, and we are definitely not complaining.

The plot is straightforward yet engaging: one insanely powerful enemy against two superheroes, one of whom is desperate to become an Avenger. Deadpool's world, consisting of the nine people he truly cares about, is in danger, and to save it, he ropes in a variant of the late James ‘Logan’ Howlett or the Wolverine. Logan, now stuck with Deadpool's incessant chatter, finds himself in the Void, facing the formidable villain Cassandra Nova (Emma-Louise Corrin) alongside a slew of other superheroes, leading to bloody battles and relentless action.

Ryan Reynolds is the heartbeat of this movie. We expect Deadpool to be unfiltered and offensive, but Reynolds elevates it to another level. His relentless banter fuels the madness of this installment, making it clear that Deadpool is an equal-opportunity offender. Reynolds' unhinged portrayal of Deadpool is a testament to the franchise's desperate need for a course correction. The film shatters the fourth wall and even takes on the fans, with Deadpool addressing them as nerds and making cheeky comments about their "special sock" for the most anticipated fight scenes. This back-to-basics approach reminds us that at its core, this franchise is based on a comic book after all and should never have been more complicated.

Hugh Jackman plays it cool as Wolverine, but his character shows signs of weariness, which Deadpool humorously addresses by suggesting the MCU will keep Jackman in the role until he's 90. Jackman takes the joke in his stride, and their on-screen chemistry flows organically. The mindless banter, sexual innuendos, and tension amid the bromance are complemented by intense action and bloodshed. There's enough and more of it, but one wonders when to really feel worried about any of the characters because almost everyone is always immortal. Well almost. The film boasts spectacular visuals typical of a big-screen outing, and at just over two hours, it seldom feels like a drag. There are many noteworthy cameos, but we aren’t the ones to give spoilers of any kind. Emma Corrin stands out as the evil Cassandra Nova, her petite frame belying the raw power she wields.

Whether you're a fan or not, 'Deadpool & Wolverine' keeps you engaged with its constant stream of action and humor. It helps to be familiar with the legacy characters and storyline (as messy and complicated as it may be) to fully appreciate the experience, especially when watching it with an enthusiastic audience. 'Deadpool & Wolverine' breaks barriers and goes where other MCU films haven't, capturing nostalgia, humour, and most importantly, delivering oodles of entertainment. This is exactly what the franchise needs to stay relevant and enjoyable.
